Ship Wars: Team Kirkov!

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 8:14 PM

Keptin Kirkov here! I am in charge of recruiting a crew for my OTP ship, Kirkov.

The ship wars are upon us! I need all able-bodied Kirk/Chekov shippers to show their support for the OTP in the upcoming battle!

If you're looking for the underdog team, you have found it. Like a challenge? You may have found it in defending our ship. It is quite likely we'll be fighting tooth and nail to win this thing, so join up, the bravest of you, enlist in starfleet today, and step aboard the USS Kirkov!

We've all seen those sports movies, where the run down team without a hope of winning somehow miraculously comes out on top? That will be us. We can win this thing!

WHAT IS SHIP WARS?
*wipes away a single crystalline bead of brow-sweat*

Can you believe it? Here we are at the end of this gargantuan rec set! I don't know about all of you, but I need a gin and tonic and a bit of a lie down. :)

I hope you've had fun this month; it's certainly been a pleasure for me to share all these favourites with you. I always enjoy an excuse to go back and rewatch fantastic vids.

Happy New Year!

Vidder: eruthros and thingswithwings
Musical artist: "Angel of the Morning" by The Pretenders
Pairing: Various
Vidder on LJ: [info]eruthros and [info]thingswithwings
Vidder's website: eruthros' Vid tag and thingswithwings' complete list of fic, vids, podfic, and meta
Why this vid kicks ass: I'm finishing up this set with what is, perhaps, the best loved songvid tribute to rare fandoms: [info]eruthros and [info]thingswithwings's ode to the mega fic exchange, Yuletide. It has every pairing you can conceive of, and a few you probably can't, and it's so lovingly put together it will leave you both awestruck at the brilliance of it and smiling with happiness. It's that kind of vid.

One-Night Fandoms: A Tribute to Yuletide
The news leaked out a couple of weeks ago, but today it became official as Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Captain Picard, was awarded a knighthood for his work in drama. Stewart, along with others, was named on the New Year’s Honours List.

Fandom: FOREVER KNIGHT
Pairing: Nick/Natalie/LaCoix
Length: 15,620 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: imajiru fiction

Why this must be read: Stories by this author have an edge that is so inviting to me. "Trio" is one of many, many stories the fandom has that uses the series finale as a new beginning for the characters, in this case LaCroix, Nick and Natalie. All the old character boundaries have been wiped away and in its place is a new reality, free from restrictions. This story is evocative and very hot, but I also appreciate the characterization of LaCroix. He's not the unflinching, overbearing father figure often presented in the series, but a vampire who misses the companionship of his beloved son.

Off to Foster City for work on a Sunday morning. :p I got a cuppa at the airport Starbucks after I found out the flight was delayed for two hours (fog at the San Francisco end). There are a few more waymarks here I thought I'd document while I was waiting; this is a restaurant in the category of "Googie Architechture," (50's-modern style, with boomerang shapes, satellite decorations, vaulted roofs, etc.) I noticed this little detail over the bar is only visible from a few angles. Unfortunately, when I was trying to take this picture, I knocked over my coffee, which did not make me happy. The guy at Starbucks very kindly gave me a new cup.

Here's a medical FYI that might be of interest to people who have seen or plan to see the SH movie. I don't think this is a spoiler in any way; in fact, I think it is an enhancer, but just in case, here's a cut.

For those who have neither performed eye surgery recently nor researched the history thereof: )
Fandom: TRANSFORMERS
TF Continuity: G1
Pairing: none
Length: overall 25,000 words with snippets
Author on LJ: [info]playswithworms
Author website: on FF.net
Why this must be read:

This series is MADE of cute. It is teeth-rottingly sweet. If you do not like the Protectobots as portrayed by playswithworms, then you have out-Scrooged Scrooge. There are several stories posted, starting with an AU origin for the Protectobots in the G1 verse, and follows them through their early shenanigans.

If you visit her FF.Net page, though, you will find that most every Protectobot snippet there is part of the same story-universe. I will bet you a virtual cupcake that, having read one, you will track down the protectobots tag on her LJ from sheer desperation to get moar fic.

In chronological order:
Protectobot Beginnings: Activation
Protectobot Beginnings: Gravity
Protectobot Beginnings: Knowledge
Protectobot Beginnings: Shield
Protectobot Beginnings: One

Tomorrow I am returning to Oxford, to spend the night with some the best people in the city. I'd like to do the last decade meme that's doing the rounds, but I am so hopeless at remember things in terms of years - I have probably forgotten loads of things of this just because they happened before the summer holidays. I will probably come back and edit this several times.

Thoughts about the Ferengi

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 7:57 PM

I've been thinking a lot about the Ferengi as of late, analyzing their culture and habits. While unfortunatly they were sometimes seen as "Straw Capitalists" to show the evils of pure capitalism on a society, I also noticed some subtly brilliant writing that really showed well how to write about an alien culture with rules vastly different than our own.

For instance, while the Ferengi style of business is extremely cutthroat, they also pride themselves in being a relatively peaceful race, with pride that they never practiced genocide or slavery. Their culture had not stagnated any despite their strong focus of capitalism. In addition, they also strove for political neutrality, helping curb themselves from getting involved in wars.

I am impressed as well with the hidden depths that the writers gave them. My favorite part of the Ferengi is how well the writers were committed to keeping the Ferengi unique and a philosophical foil for the Federation without completely making them seem like the "bad guys" on every point of view. For example, when female Ferengi were finally allowed to make profit, the writers made sure to point out that the final reasoning for allowing them was kept completely in line, giving pure Ferengi reasoning (Allowing females to make profit would help their current depression and boost the economy even more) as opposed to making it appear that they were converting to Federation style thinking.

Last, I would also like to note how well their makeup is constructed. They have an incredible skin tone to them, making them both appear alien-like yet at the same time look natural and biologically possible. Their ears were both simple yet extremely effective at further selling an alien appearance, with additional makeup helping to alter the appearance of bone structure underneath to hide the actor's true skull, giving them a full alien appearance within.

Comments and debate are fully welcome, of course! Feel free to tell me I am completely wrong too, I don't mind, I honestly enjoy the discussion of this aspect of Star Trek.

Girls on the Beach by toestastegood (G)

Fandoms: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Walt and Shannon
Length: 1260 words
Author on LJ: [info]fic_flail
Why this must be read: This is a really unique look at something that totally might have been canon. Walt was a great observer at the camp, and his crush on Shannon in this fic is adorable and completely believable. Toestastegood has really nailed the little-boy POV voice, with the random things about romance that a little boy might and might not have gleaned from television or watching adults interact.

Excerpt:
When he asked Shannon why she was folding clothes, she said she was 'anal'. Walt didn't quite understand what she meant by that; he knew it had something to do with your ass, because the guys back at school would always laugh and make jokes about it, and because Bobby Ferguson had once drawn over the word 'annual' and the teacher had yelled at him for about eight hours straight; it had been pretty cool – and he didn't get what that had to do with folding clothes, so he'd just fallen quiet and nodded.

While waiting for boats, I got to watch the Coast Guard helicopter doing an exercise with the LA County lifeguards, lowering and raising a basket from the heli to the small boat. They did this for about half an hour, with the aircraft leaving and flying in a circle, then rejoining the boat and lowering the basket again. I have a whole series of these that might make an animation if I can edit them properly.
